2008 Shakedown event
|
This
years event was again held at the Staffordshire regimental Museum in Litchfield.
The weekend before the event it had been snowing with hailstone storms,
the out look for the rest of the week looking a bit chilly. With this in mind a
quick phone call to members resulted in every one agreeing to go ahead, as it
would give them a chance to wear all the cold weather gear they had purchased as
part of the Falklands kit and boy did we need it. Arriving the Friday night,
we
managed to erect the 12x12 tent which provided in the strong winds quite a challenge.
But no matter what the weather threw at us that night, the tent proved its
worth. Saturday saw a rather chilly start to the day with most members reverting
to Parkas and quilted trousers. As the other members arrived, the other tents
were erected and the kettle saw a lot of action.
The day also bought with it several visitors to the group who
had come to see what we got up to, despite the Rain, hail and chilly
winds, Saturday was a busy day for us. Early evening saw a chance for us to don
full kit and utilize the WWI trench area that was festooned with shell craters
and various foxholes. The Saturday night proved to be rather sedate weather wise
compared to the night before, but just as equally cold. Sunday morning again was
a chilly start but the Sun soon changed that and around midday, short sleeve
order came into being. The weather allowed us to sort the kit out and we ended
up being inspired by the museums MTLB and went on the rampage with the Charlie G
and Law 66.

With the introduction of recently acquired Command tent, we were
finally able to start to piece the command post together, along with a newly
purchased Monopole antenna for the Radios. During the last year we have been
sourcing information on what paper work and paraphernalia went with a command
post and the last few months have been very fruitful in this department.
The Radio bench (above right) needs a few more bits and pieces, mainly
a junction box and radio log books, also on the table is a Message book, Call
Sign sheet and a Identification code sheet, whilst the Map table (above left) is
almost complete with Message received sheets, Call Sign sheets, Standing orders,
Griddle code sheets, Slidex code sheets (Still looking for a Slidex Folder),
Authentication codes and a log book. We still need to get the cable we need to connect
the Speaker to the radios. But its getting there.
