General Reference

 

A Companion to The British Army 1660 to 1983, David Ascoli, club associates  (c)1984, CN6778
    This book contains information on regiment date of creation, battle-honours and amalgamations up to 1983. Mostly text with Black and White prints of artwork from the18th century.

 

 

 

 

 

Today's British Army in colour, Jeremy Flack, Arms and Armour press (c)1992, ISBN 1-85409-006-2
    Although slightly later then the period we cover this book contains numerous colour and black and white pictures of various units in the field and lots of information on different units and equipment.

 

 

 

 

 

Security Forces in Northern Ireland 1969 to 1992, Tim Ripley and Mike Chappell, Osprey - Elite Series No44 (c)1993, ISBN 185532-278-1
    Some good information is found in this book although it is spoilt by the fact that they concentrate on the uniforms and equipment of the early 1990s. All in all its a below average source of information but more 92 than 69 end of the spectrum.

 

 

 

 

 

 The British Army 1965 to 1980, Major D.Smith and Angus McBride, Osprey - Men at Arms No71 (c)1986, ISBN 0-85045-273-2
    Subtitled "Combat and Service Dress", this book contains valuable information even though it concentrates more on the sixties stuff but non the less worth a read through with information on the various uniforms and equipment.

 

 

 

 

 

The British Army of the Rhine, Carl Schulze, Europe Militaria No19 (c)1995, ISBN 1-85915-031-4
    An excellent source of picture reference for mid to late eighties equipment and uniforms although it covers the early 90s as well, not to be discounted. More vehicle orientated than infantry but still some good pictures.

 

 

 

 

 

Airborne Elite (2) NATO's Northern Flank, Yves Debay and James Hill, Concord (c)1995, ISBN 962-361-719-4
    As always with the Concord series this book is mainly pictorial with little text. It mainly concentrates on the European forces but the UK section on the airborne troops is worth a look, mainly of a 1993 exercise but some back dated pictures to earlier exercises from 1986 onwards.

 

 

 

 

 

Encyclopedia of the Modern British Army Third edition, Terry Gander, Guild Publishing (c)1986, CN6651
    This is the BIBLE of information on the British Army in the 80's, first published in 1980 and the third edition in 1986 there is no mistaking the period that this book covers.

 

 

 

 

 

A Day in the life of The British Army, Col. Michael Dewar, David & Charles (c)1990, ISBN 0-7153-9774-5
    This book is all about one day in 1989 with small stories about a unit or an  individuals activities on that day supported with pictures, well worth getting.

 

 

 

 

FALKLAND REFERENCE

The Falklands Military Machine, Captain Derek Oakley, Spellmount Ltd (c)1989, ISBN 1-86227-169-0
    This was an excellent find with lots of information and picture reference although some of the pictures are repeated in other publications some unique pictures are enclosed with in its pages.

 

 

 

 

 

War in the Falklands - The Campaign in Pictures, Sunday Express, Weidenfeld and Nicolson (c)1982, ISBN 0-297-78202-9
    A bit disappointing as it it does not live upto its title but an excellent source of reference pictures. Well worth having in your collection.

 

 

 

 

The Falklands War, Marshall Cavendish.
    The BIBLE of information on the Falklands war, not much is missing from this series of magazines. Covering all aspects of the war from both sides with information on equipment and uniforms and lots of reference pictures

 

 

 

 

 

74 Days An Islanders Diary of the Falklands Occupation, John Smith, Century Publishing (c)1984, ISBN 0-7126-0361-1
    Well worth the read. A great insight to what the islanders endured and a view into how the Argentine conscripts were treated. Get this book that all I can say.
